Minnesota rules

How unpaid tax and foreclosure work in Minnesota

After about three years of unpaid tax (longer for some farm land), the property forfeits to the state and the county sells it. The owner can redeem until forfeiture; 2024 changes after Tyler v. Hennepin County return leftover equity to former owners.

Mortgage foreclosures: non-judicial. Most mortgages are foreclosed by advertisement and sold at a sheriff's sale; the owner usually has 6 months to redeem.
